What exactly is a function generator and what is it used for?. It is actually piece of test apparatus for someone that needs to to check or even build electronic tools.

It is a question of personal choice as to whether you will be a little more comfortable with a gadget that you can come into contact with, feel and push switches on or whether you might be content to change controls and parameters in a computer program. The results are the same though.
